Last week I was putting some lamps up for sale on craigslist, and did a search to see what a pair of lamps is going for these days. I had zero intention of buying lamps--I was intending to sell lamps! But I came across these beautiful cobalt ginger jar lamps and had to have them, as they are exactly the color lamps I wanted to buy last year for the dining room but couldn't find.
I rationalized this purchase by thinking that I haaaate the lamp shades on the white lamps they would be replacing, and I have been unable (for three years!) to find new 19 inch shades for less than a million dollars, so by getting slightly smaller lamps I could buy a regular 16 inch shade at Target. And I love the color of these lamps. Done!
Dimensions were included in the ad, but...I seem to have not paid close attention to them.
I get to the house where the lamps are, the garage doors go up, and GASP! They are such a beautiful color love love love and oh......wow, those are some mighty big lamps. That don't have ANY lampshades. I will take them anyways!
And so...my beautiful new lamps are wearing those lampshades I hate. I like to think the beautiful blue elevates the shades to new heights of sophistication. Or something.

They are so you, you must have them. Size be damned. And: how does one know the right size shade for base, anyway? I'm sure there must be rules, but I don't know what they are. I think I never quite get that right.
ReplyDeleteThey are me, aren't they? Thank you! :-) I don't know any rules for lamp shades, I just know what I think looks right. (The infamous "I know it when I see it" rule.)
ReplyDeleteNo, there really are rules. The height has to do with the harp and the neck, the diameter with the diameter of the base, blah blah blah...but I really think those gorgeous, incredible lamps do elevate those shades. It is a match made in heaven. That is one gorgeous looking master bedroom shot, my dear. Looking mighty fine.
ReplyDeletethank you! I am pretty happy with the room at the moment.
DeletePerfect color, and I think the shades look fabulous with these lamps. Amazing how one thing changes another, huh?
ReplyDeleteBlogless Peggy
thank you! thanks for coming over to the new blog, Peggy--haven't seen you around in a while!
DeleteGorgeous lamps and so nice to have a pair! I love them! And those shade look so much better with the new bases.
ReplyDeleteThey do look better with the new base, don't they? I still don't like them, but I think the ginger jar shape looks much better with a chinoiserie shade than the gourd shape.
