Painting All the Things Navy Blue

I'm ready to put up my Christmas tree, but the Mister says I have to wait till after dessert on Thanksgiving.

To be honest, I'm not so much ready for Christmas (not ready!) as I am missing the change of seasons.  Endless summer is disorienting.  Furthermore, I find it hard to dress myself appropriately when it is 54 degrees at school drop-off, 88 degrees at noon, and 62 degrees at dinnertime, which is the weather we had today (and the last few weeks).  Its really a 2-outfit-a-day kind of weather.  Pants and a coat from wake-up till 10 am, get changed into a summer sundress from 10 to 3 pm, then back into warmer clothing for the after school playtime.

Still, I'd rather put up with 2 outfits a day than the 32 degrees that it is currently in Jersey.

I'm getting ready to repaint the kids' upstairs bathroom.  It currently looks like this:

I like the blue color in the abstract, but it is kind of overpoweringly dark in there, and the blue feels topheavy over the beadboard.  My plan is to paint the beadboard navy blue, and the top white.

My dilemma is what to do with the vanity.  Leave it white, or paint it navy as well?

Another painting dilemma: the fireplace.  I plan on painting the fireplace.  I hate the brick.  In a few years the plan is to renovate the fireplace entirely, but for now, a coat of paint.  I've already gotten excited about painting it black, but what if....I painted it navy blue?

I can't find an inspiration picture of this anywhere.

The black is a classic color, goes with anything... but navy blue is pretty fabulous too, and it is all over my downstairs.

Why yes, I am painting All The Things in my house navy blue.  This is the navy blue house.

I just thought about it and realized that there is at least a little bit of navy blue in every single room in the house except the kitchen.

Your thoughts?  Black or navy fireplace? White or navy vanity?

  1. I Love love LOVE navy - I would have it everywhere. I think it goes perfectly with absolutely everything - neutrals tick, bold bright colors tick, lovelly crisp white tick , pastels - who cares about pastels anyway.
I actually would have added navy as the accent color in the downstairs bathroom with the chang mai prints instead of the green - because I love it so.
My bedroom is navy and it makes me happy everytime I go in there. I just bought some cast iron chairs for outside and painted them navy - they do look much better for it .
Having said all that, if the bathroom is dark, could you paint it all white with a navy vanity and navy and white printed shower curtain and accessories ?
Good luck with whatever you choose - I look forward to seeing it
    Kind Regards
    Cathy

    1. What a fabulous idea! Just paint the vanity navy and everything else white....oooh, I am intrigued. I will have to think on this one.

  2. What about painting just the top half navy? Then you don't have to paint the beadboard or the vanity. I think navy would recede more than the current blue, so it might work really well. As for the fireplace, well...I am the person who painted one orange this summer. I may not be the best person to weigh in on that. It did help me to use the Sherwin Williams online paint color tool. Was able to upload a picture of the room and try out different colors on the fireplace to get a sense of what different colors would look like. If you're wanting to try blue, try it! It's only paint and it can be recovered. Though, painting the fireplace was one tiresome job. Halfway through I wasn't sure I chose the right orange, but it's staying because I simply cannot bear the thought of painting all those little mortar grooves again for a long time.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. And I hear you on that weather. I love having 4 distinct seasons. Though summer is my least favorite, so I guess I'll never be a California girl.

    1. I am afraid to paint the top half navy--it is quite dark in there, even though I have a nearly 300 watts of light in the light fixture. I am afraid if I paint the top navy it will be even darker. I had contemplated ripping up the existing beadboard and putting in taller beadboard (say 5.5 feet-ish), so that the dark painted top would not be so overpowering...but that seems like more work than I want to take on at the moment.

I like the orange on your fireplace, but I totally understand not wanting to deal with the not-quite-right choice.

  3. I agree with Rita - I think navy would look great on the top half of the walls with white beadboard and vanity. To me, the current blue is just a bit too primary to use as wall color. I would also stick with black on the fireplace just because I think it would look nice and graphic with the rug, but either would be a good choice!

    1. yeah, that blue did not not turn out as expected, despite having tested it beforehand.

  4. Joining the navy blue bunch, as I just painted our guest room/play room navy blue this weekend. (Actually, it came out a bit brighter than I wanted, but good enuf. And certainly still not as bright as your bathroom.) Not so sure about the fireplace, though...hmm. Leaning for black on that one.

    1. ooh! Can't wait to see your guest room! I am stumped on the fireplace...I think black would look fabulous, but blue would be the less expected choice.
