The Master Bedroom (In Progress): new headboard

Lots of bleeding eyeballs on that last post.  I will admit that the sheer number of people who voted that the curtains with the quilts were awful now has me second-guessing every single design decision ever, especially since I like the curtains and quilt together just fine, but I am choosing to look at this as "50+ people saw that post and thought the combo was horrible but chose to politely remain silent."  I have polite, kind readers!

The exciting thing about the internet is that if your eyeballs are bleeding, you can choose to avert your eyes.

************
Lately my tastes have been changing. For a long time I loved all things Hollywood Regency, and shiny glam mirrored everything.  But this house we bought seems to ask for something different.  Despite the fact that the outside of our house looks like a Tudor castle, the inside has very little architectural detail. It is simple and casual. I love the bright, airy, spacious feeling this house has, and the white walls with wood floors seems to call for simpler things.

I'm feeling more boho casual than Hollywood Regency (more Emily Henderson than Mary McDonald).  I don't dislike shiny glam, but I'm looking for something different in this house.

The headboard in our master bedroom was a craigslist buy last year.  I loved it when I bought it and I still like it, but my one dislike about it was that hung on the walls by D-rings and did not attach to the bed.

We frequently lost pillows to the space between the headboard and the bed, and the occasional child fell back there once or twice.  I wanted a headboard that was square, simple, and would attach to the bedframe.
I loved the matelasse headboard from West Elm, but it was sold out and discontinued when I discovered it.  But I kept checking back to the website, looking at the picture, thinking of making the headboard myself.  And then one day, a king headboard appeared for sale on the West Elm website.  The heavens opened and the angels sang.  I grabbed my West Elm gift cards that I have been hoarding for two years and bought it.

I like how simple yet textured the headboard is.  And that it attaches to the bedframe, and it is padded, and it just looks lovely.  I moved the horse painting and the Nate Berkus bedding, formerly of the guest room, into the master.

Edited to add: the orange lamps on the nightstands are from downstairs in the living room and have been in the rotation for years.  The small white lamps previously on the nightstands (not the enormous white ones over on the dresser) moved down to the living room. I think I have moved every single pair of lamps in this house to a new place at least twice in the past six months.  Also, I don't think there are any pictures of the previous curtains in the window seat, but they were replaced with plain white curtains.

  1. I liked the old one and I like the new one. The painting and bedding looks fabulous in here. It looks peaceful and inviting.
I was one of the people that voted bleeding eyes on the boys room post, but there was just one thing I forgot - Do the boys like the curtains and bedspreads - if so they are definitely a keeper , if not, ... I look forward to the next installment in decorating that room.
    Kind Regards
    Cathy

    1. The boys do not really care one way or the other about their bedding and curtains, so its not a huge issue.

  2. Love the new one! I have an attached bed frame and still loose pillows so the unattached never would have worked for me! I like both old and new!

In defense of the haters, my eyes weren't literally bleeding but if I had an option I would have selected something along the lines of "ummmm too many patterns in one place." I usually am totally blown away and imprrssed with your matching and combining of colors. I'm pretty good at pairing blues with whites so my house is very predictable.

    1. Also, did I miss it...you painted those damn lamps again? Love the orange, but those lamps make me literally laugh. They must have an identity crisis. Does she love us? Then why must we change?!?!

    2. Thanks Steph! I didn't paint the lamps---those are from the living room. I edited the post to reflect that (there are links above to see where they were before).

  5. I really like the headboard--the whole room. And don't doubt your design decisions! I like what you do here because it doesn't look like anyone else's stuff. If I had to use one word to describe your style, it would be "bold." You use strong lines, strong colors, strong patterns. That's hard to pull off. (Love how you're doing it in this bedroom, btw.) I think all of us who color outside the popular lines hit a clinker every now and then. I've got a bird-covered shower curtain that is now long gone from my house, but it lives on in my blog archives to keep me humble. :-) And no one really told me it was all wrong, either. Failure is part of the creative process. I don't think you can be good if you never take risks and sometimes fail.

  6. I'm one of the ones who voted "bleeding eyes" in the last post... but really, isn't design and style all about what *we* like? If you like the mixing of patterns, who cares what anyone else thinks? I voted the way I did just because I didn't personally care for the mixing of the 2 patterns together, but if you saw me in person you'd see me wearing 2 kinds of stripes and a 3rd pattern in the outfit I was wearing. LOL. I'm quirky and I know it.. but I like it, so... I try not to let what other people think bother me. I know, easy to say and hard to do, but that's what I'm trying for, anyway. All to say, cheer up, and design away!!

  7. I love it. You are nailing the airy and casual feel. I've never had a headboard, so it's good to hear about others' experiences. Stay strong with your design decisions. It's hard to swim against the crowd, but if you love it, that's all that matters.

  10. I like this exactly the way it is. Don't second guess yourself. You are the one living in your home. You should do what you like, and forget what we had to say.
