my new uniform

I like to wear a uniform.  Twelve years of Catholic school took away any ability to dress myself in a fashionable manner. I like the mindlessness of wearing the same thing, day in and day out.  For the past few baby-making, weight-gaining-and-losing years I have bought five of the same pair of black or gray sweatpants every fall, and six of the same long-sleeve shirt, and worn them every single day.

Over the past year, I've been looking at my wardrobe with a more critical eye.  I'm done having children. I am no longer in the gain-fifty-lbs, lose-fifty-lbs every eighteen months cycle that I have been in for the past few years.  I am within a few pounds of my pre-baby weight, and hereabouts is probably where I'll stay.

I would like to wear pretty clothes again.

I have a few quirks.  I hate waistbands. I don't like wearing pants unless they are loose sweatpants.  I don't like tight clothing anywhere.  I do not like to wear jeans. I do not like to wear slacks. I do not like to wear shorts.  I do not like to wear elasticized anything. I admire other people wearing button up shirts but want to rip them off within three seconds of putting one on.  I do not wear uncomfortable shoes for any reason.  I have an entire bin of dress shoes I used to wear with suits in my garage. I should get rid of them, as I haven't worn them in nearly SEVEN YEARS, but I hold onto them, thinking heaven forbid I have to go to a funeral and I can't wear sneakers with a suit.

I am thinking of making the unprecedented move of getting rid of 75% the clothes in my closet.  I have lots of jeans. I keep looking for the mythical pair that won't make me uncomfortable.  They do not exist, but the proof of my quest is in the twelve pairs of unworn jeans in my closet.  I wear them on the rare occasion the Mister and I might go out to dinner with another couple, and since we don't know a soul here, the mandatory wearing of uncomfortable clothing isn't happening.  I could also get rid of my shorts, and slacks, and button up shirts.

What I really want is a uniform.

What I like to wear is A-line jersey cotton sundresses.  And you know what?  THAT is going to be my uniform.

I bought this dress in every color.

I also bought this dress in nearly ever color.

And now I have many many cotton jersey dresses. I have my uniform.  I can wear an A-line cotton dress EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I am ridiculously excited about this.  Shorts and jeans begone!

  1. Great choice! Since I've been a stay-at-home mom, I kind of dread getting dressed in the morning. After knee surgery three years ago, I lost 20 pounds. Needless to say, I've gained them back and I'm down to one pair of jeans which are miserably uncomfortable.  A uniform might just be the ticket.

    Love your choice.

  2. You are too funny.  I love that you bought those dresses (which are really cute!) in every color.  I kind of have a uniform myself.  I have lots of cute clothes and shoes which I rarely wear (or fit) these days.  I pretty much wear my work clothes (scrubs, so basically pj's) 7 days of the week.  I can't believe my husband isn't totally disgusted with me by now.  He's a keeper!

And then shoes!  And then little sweaters to keep my arms warm in the air conditioning!

You're right, I should get started on that.  Where is a good place for inexpensive cute necklaces?

I am all about not having to think about anything, especially clothing.

I really want to know what your job is.  You say you have a job everyone hates like the IRS, but yet you wear scrubs....what exactly do you do?

I find A-line dresses to be the most comfortable option, give them a try!

  8. So how do you like the v-neck cap sleeve dress?  It is very cute.  I am thinking of ordering one in navy, but I just like the sleeves to be slightly longer.

  9. These are both really great options for a uniform. There are jeans out there that can be comfortable, but you need to look long and hard and spend big bucks. I've heard Not Your Daughter's Jeans are nice, but pricey.

  11. I have basically worn this uniform for about four years (+/- a few maxi dresses).  These dresses are comfy and versatile with just a few accessories.  In the winter I add leggings and boots.   It's nice to know I'm not alone in my "dress" uniform.

I love it, although if I am being honest, I wish it were two inches longer.  They carry that one in the stores, usually by the bathing suit section.

I have never found any jeans to be comfortable for longer than an hour. I just have no luck with them.

I can't do leggings, its elastic around my waist.  I usually switch to sweatpants in the winter.  I wish I could wear leggings, it would certainly be more attractive than sweatpants.

  16. Great choices! Once you find your neclaces and little sweaters, ould you model them for us? And keep one or two pairs of shoes--not the bin!

  19. I have good luck with Target right when the new stuff comes out, but then all the cute ones get snatched up.  I have heard good things about Cost Plus though.

  21. A signature look is a good thing, as is reevaluating the same every now and again. Like both those dresses - though I wonder if living in the Land of Designer Jeans as you do now might not change your mind about the same?
