Beige-apalooza and a blank canvas

One of the reasons I've been moving verrrrry slowly on decorating this house is that this entire house is a soul-sucking beige that I am not allowed to paint. I will admit that it is not the Worst Beige Ever (that beige is in the boys' bedroom), but still, it has a peachy undertone that I detest. I suppose I could repaint it a less offensive beige and my landlord probably wouldn't notice, but I refuse to paint more beige, and we have 20 foot ceilings.  Nester recommends that every house have a "lovely limitation" but this is not a limitation. It is a death knell of ugliness.

After moving all the furniture around, I have been staring at the blank wall behind the tv, waiting for inspiration.  I have all the frames from the gallery wall in the last house, but that wall had a hell of a lot of holes in it when we moved out, and this house is a rental.  I'd prefer to avoid damaging the wall that much.  Also, the room seems dark enough without adding 50 black frames to it.  Also, I'm taking a break from gallery walls for a few years.

One of the ways I am trying to overcome all the beige is to use lots of white and blue.  My brilliant idea is to make two large white and blue paintings and hang them partially behind the tv.  I will probably go with yet another splatter painting because I am a one trick pony.

Pretend there are two canvases up there.
Supplies have been assembled, now I just need a two hour block of time.

  1. You are anything but a one trick pony! I love your splatter painting, and the one where you painted the Chiang Mai Dragon fabric. You have talent and patience! Check out a post on the blog "Simple Details," dated July 27, 2015. http://simpledetailsblog.blogspot.com/ She's showing an ORC room with nail heads on the ceiling, BUT if you scroll down for her inspiration picture, there is some wallpaper that might be worth looking at before you paint that canvas.

    1. ooh, that wallpaper is interesting! That seems like a tape it off sort of project, but you'd have to paint the underneath first, then paint white on top again.....hmmm.

    2. You would know better than I would! I thought it could be easily accomplished by painting the canvas white, and then just painting lines. Obviously, I'm not much of a painter!

  2. There are a bunch of houses being flipped in our neighborhood right now, and I was asking Cane just the other day, "Why do they all paint the walls beige? Is there anyone who likes beige walls?" I guess there must be. BUT, I don't think it's a death knell of ugliness. Really. I'm not just saying that to be nice. I like the white and blue idea. I say ride that pony as far as you can go. :-)

    1. Its everywhere! We looked at 33 houses/apartments when we were looking for a place to live, and ONE of them was painted white. Every single other apartment we looked at was some hideous shade of beige. Its a pandemic here.

  3. Well, you know that Irvine & beige are synonyms, right? ;) (I'm one to talk, out here in cookie-cutter Temecula.) I do hope the move is making life & commuting easier overall, though!

    1. thanks Kelly---my life has improved dramatically since moving here--I'm driving so much less. The kids miss all their friends though. As usual, Irvine is like the zombie apocalypse. We've been here four months and haven't met a soul in our neighborhood. No kids at all.

    2. I wonder if the zombie apocalypse aspect is just a feature of newer neighborhoods. We're in Orange and our house was built mid to late 60s. We know all the near neighbors - most of them introduced themselves within a week of us moving in.

  4. Hi Lisa, I found your blog when I was looking for photos of Waverly Olana fabric and you posted a chair upholstered in it. Anyway, I really like your blog and I mentioned you on my blog, http://thesimpleyear.com/. I love seeing all your photos. I love what you've done with your house. :)

  5. We're getting ready to sell our house in Orange and I just touched up the beige paint I never got around to painting over.

    1. I have no idea how long we will be here, but I know this ugly beige will outlast us.
